The awakening of Princess Aurora holds remarkable parallels, as well as a few contrasts, with that of Prince
Siddhartha Gautama, the living Buddha, or Awakened One. The ancient fairy tale of Little Briar Rose, as she became known under the care and forest tutelage of the three good fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather, has many sources, some which date back a millennia and hail from various lands and cultures. We will use Walt Disney's 1959 classic as the vehicle to explore and compare these awakenings. The Sleeping Beauty was Walt's favourite story, and this is clearly evidenced in the animation technique and style he uses in complete departure from the Disney style before and since, as it is inspired and derived from Medieval illuminated manuscripts and Gothic architecture, as well as from Modernist Art. The music is from Tchaikovsky's ballet.
