A monthly event, Dharma Movie Night features a film that, in some way, deals with Buddhist themes. Films are shown at Ekoji Buddhist Sangha, 3411 Grove Ave., beginning at 7:30 on selected Saturday evenings. Dharma Movie Night features in previous years have included The Matrix, Jacob's Ladder, Groundhog's Day, Enlightenment Guaranteed, Himalaya, and The Wizard of Oz.

Dharma Movie Night affords us the opportunity to cultivate the practice of viewing cinema through a Buddhist lens. Coming together as sangha, the supportive community of practitioners, we enrich both our human experience and our dharma practice together. This, in turn, transforms and ennobles each step of our journey along the Eightfold Noble Path as movies become vehicles of Dharma, vehicles of the teaching. And most importantly, it’s fun to have Saturday Night at the Movies…..

"I will lift you up to where you belong..."

Watch Richard Gere before he became a Buddhist. An allegory for spiritual apprenticeship, An Officer and a Gentleman depicts Naval Officer Candidate Zack Mayo as he butts heads with his trainer, Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. When he violates and cheats on the Naval precepts, his teacher, determining Mayo an unsuitable candidate who must end his training, subjects him to unbearable tests to force him out. Mayo is determined to complete his apprenticeship. How will he prove himself worthy to self and others? How can he endure and survive this agony of suffering?

After the film, there is a moderated discussion on how the film illustrates some aspect of the Buddhadharma or demonstrates an intersection with Buddhism.

Films are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Movies are free of charge, but donations to the temple are always welcomed.
